Horse Care

Horse Handling

Horse Riding

Theory

Level 2

Horse Care

Horse Handling

  1. Leading get the horse to trot before you

Horse Riding

  1. Rising trot without holding on
  2. Emergency stop in halter
  3. Using correct phases walk, trot, halt, back up.

Level 3

Horse Care

  1. Prepare Horse for riding in 20 mins
  2. Know how to check the fit of the saddle

Horse Handling

  1. Put on and fit a bridle
  2. Leading, get the horse to trot before you
  3. Hind-quarter yield staying in circle
  4. Fore-quarter yield staying in circle
  5. Move hindquarters without touching, using driving game.

Horse Riding

Passenger Game-

  • Rising trot on own for 2 laps both reins
  • Keep horse walking for four laps both reins
  • Emergency stop Bareback
  • Walk bareback

Theory

  1. Name ten points on a horse
  2. Name five points on a saddle and a bridle.

These must be different to those used previously.

Horse care:

  • Know how to measure a horse’s weight
  • Be able to worm a horse
  • Be able to measure and fit a rug to a horse
  • Know how to assemble and fit a saddle

 

Horse handling

  • Demonstrate the Principle Games thoroughly

 

Horse Riding

  • Ride with a single rein walk and trot, being able to toss rope over horses head whilst walking and trotting.
  • Weave in and out of cones at walk and trot with reins.
  • Weave in and out of cones at walk using a carrot stick.
  • Show a single rein back up and a two rein back up
  • Passenger game-Rising trot 4 laps both reins
  • Know trot diagonals (when should you rise?) and demonstrate.
  • Canter  
  • Walk and trot out in big yard

  • Know the 7 games of Parelli Natural Horsemanship. Name & describe them.
  • Name and describe characteristics of 2 breeds.

Level 6

Horse Care

  • Know why & how to bandage a leg and demonstrate.
  • Know when, where and why to bleach a horses’ hoof and how to do it.
  • Know why & how and when to bandage a tail and demonstrate.
  • Describe what a hoof that’s due for a trim looks like.
  • Describe what a healthy, well-trimmed hoof looks like
  • Describe 3 common hoof faults

 

Horse Handling

  • Know whether a horse is tense and gauge how tense. Describe.
  • Know whether a horse is relaxed and gauge how relaxed. Describe.
  • Know when it is appropriate to ‘shorten’ your phases & demonstrate using the Principle Games
  • Use the 7 games to find your horses’ stiff or dominant side
  • Demonstrate Game #5 with 2 different stops
  • Demonstrate the Falling Leaf
  • Float load a horse
  • Find an ‘edge’ in your horse and use the Friendly Game to build the horses’ confidence under saddle
